'Light Bulb Moment' for retailers wanting increased sales and reduced energy bills

Creative use of lighting can cut energy bills by as much as 84% and enhance a store’s appearance, authors of a new report reveal today.

With the retail sector consuming more lighting energy than any other commercial sector and soaring energy costs increasingly affecting a store’s profitability, there is greater urgency among retailers for the creation of effective, energy efficient lighting schemes

The report, The essential guide to retail lighting: Achieving effective and energy-efficient lighting, comes from BRE, the UK’s leading building research body, and is published by IHS BRE Press. It provides retailers, architects and designers with detailed practical information and guidelines to develop energy efficient, cost-effective lighting solutions for both new and existing stores. It covers key elements such as state-of-the-art highly efficient electric lighting, advanced daylighting, and lighting controls.

“We found that a typical shopping centre has an average installed lighting load of almost 50 Watts per square metre”, said one of the report’s authors’ Dr Paul Littlefair. “This could easily be halved by innovative lighting design, while enhancing the appearance of the store and increasing sales.”

Praise for the report has come from Nigel Keen, Director of Property Services, John Lewis Partnership who said: “The essential guide to retail lighting provides retailers, architects and designers with detailed practical information and guidelines to explain how best to develop energy efficient, cost-effective lighting solutions for new and existing stores”.
