BRE & partners sign alliance for delivery of Beijing Green Building Park

In Beijing today, the UKs world leading centre of excellence on the built environment BRE (Building Research Establishment) will sign an agreement with Chinese developer Vanke, the Chinese Government and partners* to deliver a 450,000m2 park in Beijing that will feature up to twenty exemplary demonstration homes and buildings.

The UK Ambassador to China Sebastian Wood and Chinese Vice Minister of Housing and Urban/Rural Development Qiu Baoxing will be present at the signing which takes place in the Beijing International Conference Centre.

Based on the original BRE Innovation Park model in Watford, the Beijing Park is being created to give the Chinese and international construction supply chains a means by which they can test and trial new and innovative designs, materials, products and technologies for homes and communities before applying them in the real world at volume.

The Park is being delivered at a crucial time for the Chinese who have the challenge of delivering 36 million affordable homes in the next five years. As well as being cost effective, the Government want these homes to be sustainable, resource efficient and great spaces to live in.

BRE who created the Park concept in 2005 in response to challenging housing and community legislation from the UK Government, will spearhead ‘Best of British’ on the Beijing Park  taking with them a number of UK based partners to Beijing to build 10 of the homes.

Dr Peter Bonfield Chief Executive of BRE says ‘The UK has world leading knowledge on sustainable building design and construction. Being involved with the Beijing Green Building Park gives our construction industry a fantastic opportunity to showcase their products and services in a housing market that has predicted growth on an unprecedented scale’

Alongside the demonstration homes, a key feature of the Park will be a green space which will be open to the general public for leisure pursuits and educational purposes - it will be the only park in the city that is free for use by the whole community.
