PODPASSIV prototype home to be launched at INSITE11

Cub house designer Charlie Greig will launch a new prototype home at INSITE11, 4-5 Oct,   BRE. Called Podpassiv, the prefabricated kit house offers a semi-permanent solution to a range of housing requirements.

Manufactured in the UK from a composite glass-reinforced plastic, the structure is resistant to extreme temperatures and weather conditions which makes it ideal for disaster zones where supplies of water and electricity are unavailable.

The shelter, which has a life span in excess of 20 years, consists of four moulds: a wall section, upright/horizontal posts, roof /floor trays and a door panel section. It can be erected by unskilled labour and requires no foundation base. Sustainable features include rainwater collection and solar lamps fitted in the roof tray which provide 6-8 hours of continuous quality LED lighting from one single day solar charge.  Pods can be easily dismantled, sanitised and recycled for another use, thereby reducing costs and materials wastage.

Charlie said ' While Podpassiv is an ideal temporary housing solution in disaster zones,  it also can be used for a range of other purposes: transitional housing, construction site offices, temporary classrooms and leisure and event and MOD infrastructure applications.'

The Podpassiv prototype will be exhibited at INSITE11, a free two-day conference and exhibition focusing on translating retrofit challenges into business opportunities to drive market transformation.
