Top fire engineer joins BRE

BRE has appointed Professor David Charters as its new Director of Fire Engineering Analysis Group. Professor Charters is a leading fire engineer with more than 18 years' experience in the field. He joins BRE Fire and Security from Arup Fire where he was a Director.

Professor Charters previously worked as Chief Engineer for the Department of Health, and before that at the UK Atomic Energy Authority - he was responsible for the quantified fire risk assessment of London Underground stations following the Kings Cross fire, and also a number of offshore platforms after the Piper Alpha disaster. More recently he developed the Risk-Informed Fire Safety Management System for Network Rail, and has been responsible for re-drafting HTM81 Fire Precautions in New Hospitals.

With a Doctorate in Fire Growth & Smoke Movement in Tunnels, he is currently International President-elect of the Institution of Fire Engineers, visiting Professor in Fire Risk Analysis at the University of Ulster and Chair of the British Standards committee on Fire Safety Engineering.

'David is a key part of our strategy to strengthen and develop the fire consultancy and research team,' said Debbie Smith, Director of BRE Fire and Security. BRE Fire and Security currently carries out work for a broad client base that includes government departments, regulators, manufacturers, specifiers and architects.  'David will help us deliver fire safety solutions for our customers, as well as underpinning our efforts to improve fire safety by providing education about the very real risk of fire.'
