BRE collaborates on Brasilia Innovation Park

An Innovation Park based on the BRE model in Watford is to transform the construction industry in Brazil through innovation and applied research.

Based in the capital Brasilia, the park will be the catalyst for modernisation of a construction sector which is currently experiencing a period of unprecedented growth.

The Park will be built on the grounds of the University of Brasilia. It will include up to 10 demonstration homes and buildings showcasing the latest low carbon designs, materials and technologies along with a building with office spaces, conference centre, incubator and visitor centre. It will demonstrate new methods of construction and technologies that are innovative, affordable, fast to build with and sustainable.

BRE will be involved in the concept design, delivery, and post construction activities including research, development and Innovation.

BRE signed a new Accord with the Brazilian Minister for Science and Technology Aloizio Mercadante, on the 10 August in the presence of the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff.  The Accord sets out the Brazilian Governments and industries' intent to work closely with BRE on a growing programme of research, innovation, sustainability, standards setting, certification and knowledge exchange focussed on addressing the challenges and opportunities in the built environment in Brazil.  The first project within the Accord will be to build PISAC.

Minister Aloizio Mercadante of the Ministry of Science and Technologies said ‘We need to create a better built environment in Brazil and innovation is key in this process. I welcome the park of innovation and sustainability in Brasilia. There is huge demand for new homes, schools and communities and the country is preparing for the build programmes around the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. This Park will be a vital learning component for Brazil's future developments - we want it to inspire a new way of thinking and developing civil construction in Brazil'

Dr Peter Bonfield, CEO of BRE said 'I am delighted with this partnership with Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry CBIC, University of Brasilia, BASF Brazil and many others for building this Park in Brasilia...The Park will help the sector to address Brazilian growth related issues as well as looking at creation opportunities to Brazilian and UK companies.

Partners on the project include the Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry (CBIC), University of Brasilia(UnB), Syndicate of the Construction Industry of Federal District (Sinduscon-DF), Government of the Federal District (GDF), the Ministry of Science and Technologies (MCT) and BRE.
