Construction - more sustainable?

The Sustainable Construction Task Group has published a report concluding that most construction industry companies remain ignorant of the benefits that sustainable practices can bring.

Whilst acknowledging the considerable progress  made in embracing the sustainability agenda, the report reveals widespread confusion across the industry as to what sustainability really means. It analyses the achievements of the past three years, highlighting areas where most progress has been made and setting out a challenging agenda for the future.

The Task Group's report is available from the Sustainable Construction page of the BRE website https://www.bre.co.uk/services/Sustainable_construction.html (click on the last bullet point).

It includes case studies, a list of reference material and links to relevant organisations, which will provide a useful start point for companies wanting to know more about sustainability. It also has a chapter on the business benefits for those sceptical about the value of sustainability.

The report will be followed up with guidance on how to optimise built assets through management and refurbishment, occupancy evaluation and whole life costing. This will be published in January 2004.
