BRE welcomes Ministerial adoption of SBTG recommendations

Martin Wyatt, Chief Executive of BRE, welcomed the weight of support given by the Government to the Sustainable Buildings Task Group Report.

"The prompt and positive response sends a clear message to industry of just how seriously Whitehall takes the whole issue of environmental responsibility. BRE wholeheartedly supports the initiative and welcomes the establishment of a Code for Sustainable Buildings (CSB)."

For the past 10 years, BRE's work has focused on sustainability - developing the industry's understanding of what can be done to reduce the impact caused by the built environment. This knowledge has been translated into guidance and tools that are already in use. "We particularly welcome the SBTG's suggestion that the Code be based on the BREEAM," says Wyatt "This environmental assessment method is well-established and held in high regard. It puts the industry at second base straightaway. Today's commitment will speed up the pace of advancement and put the UK at the forefront of environmental progress.

BRE looks forward to working with government, the SBTG and other key stakeholders in developing the CSB."

BREEAM is BRE's Environmental Assessment Method for buildings. It assesses buildings against a range of environmental issues and gives a score (on a scale of PASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD and EXCELLENT) depending on performance. The building receives a BREEAM Certificate that can be used by an organisation to promote its environmental credentials.

BREEAM covers several different building types including, offices, homes, industrial units, retail developments, and bespoke building types. BREEAM is accepted by the UK's construction and property sectors as the measure of best practice in environmental design and management.

BREEAM is a trademark of BRE
