'Home for the Future' winning entry to be built at BRE

The ‘Green House’ from Gaunt Francis Architects has been selected as the winner of the Home for the Future competition, part of the British Homes Awards. An example of the winning house will be built at BRE later this year.

The competition, open to registered architects, was to develop a visionary eco-sensitive design for tomorrow's mainstream housing.

Nine entries were shortlisted earlier this year, and Mail on Sunday readers and viewers of Real Estate TV voted for their favourite home. The result was announced at the Mail on Sunday British Homes Awards (sponsored by NHBC and supported by the National Centre for Excellence in Housing, BRE, Building Design magazine, Real Estate TV and Velux) at the London Marriott Hotel on 31 May.

The winning entry, including walls built from recycled slag and insulated with sheep's wool will be built on the Innovation Park at BRE's Watford site later this year. Visitors to the BRE OFFSITE2007 exhibition that opens on 11 June will be able to study the design in detail as part of this leading event for those with an interest in sustainable building technologies.

For further details, see the National Centre for Excellence in Housing's website at www.homein.org, or watch an hour-long programme covering each entry and the work of BRE on Real Estate TV online [broadband recommended]
