Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visits BRE

HRH Princess Royal at BREOn Monday 22 May Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited BRE at their headquarters in Watford. BRE / LPCB is the leading centre in the UK for approvals, research, testing, training and specialist advice for the environmental, construction, fire and security industries. The Princess Royal's visit came about following an article in the Daily Telegraph where HRH questioned why there are so few women in science, engineering and technology.

A number of female scientists and engineers are employed by BRE and HRH met some of them and saw examples of their work. Carol Atkinson, Managing Director of the BRE's LPCB spoke to HRH about BRE's continuous efforts to encourage more scientists and in particular females into the industry. One of the initiatives BRE is currently undertaking is participating in The Royal Academy of Engineering Scheme, which is designed to stimulate young people into thinking about careers in engineering. BRE is working with Parmiters, a local school, on a biometrics research project. The students from Parmiters showed HRH the prototypes they had built and explained to HRH how they had developed a mechanical device for positioning test fingers on finger print readers for the purpose of testing the equipment.

The Princess Royal also visited BRE's 10MW Burn Hall and was shown a fire test demonstrating the type of work which helps to save lives, property and protect businesses.

To end the visit, HRH then was taken to BRE 's Innovation Park (sponsored by DCLG (formerly The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) and the Department of Trade and Industry) which features full scale demonstration houses built using the latest construction methods. The houses trial and demonstrate new and emerging technologies for buildings, such as renewables and other environmental systems, smart IT and sensor technologies. Before HRH departed The Princess Royal was presented with an LPCB Red Book, which is a specifiers guide that lists all of our approved products and services.
