Water in the NHS - Key Facts

The NHS consumes approximately 40-50 million cubic metres (40-50 billion litres) of water each year. Water use per member of staff in hospitals is approximately 10 times greater than in a typical office environment.

This water usage represents annual costs of approximately £60 million with similar costs for its disposal as sewage.

Financial savings of up to 20% (worth more than £10 million per year) may be achieved through low and no cost water-efficiency improvements.
