Travel in the NHS - Key Facts

The various forms of transport used within the health sector is estimated to emit 3.4 million tonnes of CO2 each year, representing 18% of healthcare emissions.

The NHS accounts for 5% of all road traffic in England, a large proportion of which is single occupant travel. Of these journeys, 56% of all journeys by car are estimated to be less than five miles and 23% less than two miles.

Active travel, such as walking and cycling, can reduce environmental impacts and money spent on creating active travel environments directly saves NHS resources on preventable deaths attributed to physical inactivity such as coronary heart disease and colon cancer
