Procurement in the NHS - Key facts
Procurement has the most significant impact on carbon emissions of all healthcare activities. The NHS in spends more than £20 billion annually on goods and services, resulting in the emission of approximately 11 million tonnes of CO2, 60% of its carbon footprint.
Nearly 6 million tonnes of CO2 can be attributed to the procurement of pharmaceuticals, medical instruments and medical equipment.
The NHS spends approximately £500 million to serve 300 million meals each year. In 2005 / 2006, 13 million patient meals were wasted - either untouched or un-served.
Saving Carbon Improving Health - the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy states that the NHS should take every opportunity to manage its operations and procurement efficiently, thereby minimising wastage and carbon from the outset.
