UCLH Sustainable Development Policy

UCLH has a vision of being not only a forerunner in sustainability and carbon reduction practice within the NHS and public sector, but also relative to the private sector. The development of its Carbon and Sustainability Management Plan began in 2009 with a self assessment to identify current levels of performance in relation to the following headings:

  • Management commitment
  • Legal compliance and risk management
  • Lifecycle processes
  • Continuous improvement
  • Supply chain management
  • Stakeholder involvement
  • Market presence
  • Waste minimisation/resource management
  • Utilities
  • Land management and biodiversity
  • Transport

Policy statements have been developed to meet the Trust's needs in line with Department of Health and NHS policy. Action plans have been drafted with targets to cover energy, water, waste, travel, procurement, pollution, land use, community, and workforce development. The resulting Plan enables the Trust to identify key steps in its ambition to become carbon neutral, perform well in the CRC league tables, be an “Excellent” Good Corporate Citizen, and be a forerunner within the public sector in terms of carbon management and sustainable operations.
