Carbon Footprint

Today’s main environmental concern is climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions  arising from energy use, transport. With an overall CO2 footprint of approximately 18.6 million tonnes, the NHS is also the largest public sector contributor to the UK’s CO2 account.

Understanding carbon emissions is becoming increasingly important to allow Trusts to establish baselines, set targets and report on carbon reductions; and to comply with reporting requirements set out in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

The SDU estimates that procurement typically represents 60% of a Trust’s emissions, whilst energy use represents 22% of emissions followed by transport at 18%.
