Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park Authority Headquarters Sustainability consultants

Project: Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park Authority Headquarters

Client: Gardiner & Theobald Management Services

BRE Scotland Role: Sustainability Consultants

Sustainable Design Consultancy

BRE Scotland was commissioned by Gardiner & Theobald LLP to be the sustainability consultants for the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park Headquarters.

As a result of the consultancy a number of measures were taken which subsequently resulted in a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Some of the measures taken were

  • The client agreed to produce a Building User Guide to ensure efficient use of the building by its occupants and technical/facilities manager
  • Commitments were made to source all timber responsibly from sustainably managed sources
  • Openable windows were specified for opposite sides of the building to increase the use of natural ventilation and give the occupants an adequate view out on either side
  • An energy metering strategy was produced in order to allow sub-metering to be installed in each area/major energy supply in the building
  • Provisions were made to maximise the possibility for bicycle use by providing secure and well lit cycle rack, lockers and changing and drying facilities.
  • Proximity detection shut-off was installed on the water supply to the WC’s
  • During the construction phase it was agreed by the constructors that over half the aggregate used would be recycled and all timber used would be responsibly sourced

The final building was completed in December 2007.  The building encompasses a high standard of sustainability through its use of renewable heat from the biomass boiler and its extensive use of natural, sustainably sourced materials.  These features, along with the sustainability advice provided by the consultants at BRE Scotland helped the Headquarters building in achieving the predicted BREEAM excellent rating.
