Environmental certification schemes
BREEAM, Environmental profiles, Microgeneration (MCS) Responsible sourcing
‘Green' claims are easy to make but much harder to substantiate. This means that operating more sustainably is not as simple as specifying products and services that are marketed as being green.
Independent assessment and certification not only ensures that green claims are based on fact, but also that products and services meet performance standards appropriate for their intended use. This is important both to the specifier needing to fulfil a sustainability brief, and to the supplier wanting to demonstrate green credentials.
We have developed assessment methods and standards for certifying products and services to help you navigate the claims and counter claims for environmental performance. These include:
BREEAM - the world's leading environmental assessment method for buildings and now communities. BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de-facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.
Environmental Profiles Certification Scheme - provides ongoing independent, third party assessment and certification of materials and products for their environmental performance.
Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products - a Standard (BES 6001) against which products are assessed to ensure that they have not, for example, been manufactured in ways that damage the environment or unfairly exploit the workforce.
Green Guide Online - listings of building materials and components that have been assessed in terms of their environmental impact across their entire life cycle - from ‘cradle to grave'.
Green Book Live- a free online database that brings together listings from a number of organisations and delivers comprehensive information on green products and services, some approved to stringent environmental requirements and others based on information provided by manufacturers and trade bodies.
Green Book Live lists licensed BREEAM assessors and BREEAM Approved Practitioners.
Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - MCS is owned by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and BRE Global certifies products and installers against robust criteria for microgeneration technologies under the scheme.
Certified Thermal Details and Products Scheme and database allows users to search a range of accurate and independently assessed thermal junction details, opening products (windows, doors and rooflights) and major elements (walls, roofs and floors), ensuring accuracy, consistency, credibility and quality throughout the design and specification process.
Energy Assessor Training: BRE Academy delivers highly regarded ABBE and City & Guilds programmes leading to the vaious Diplomas in energy assessment.
