DNB Group scores first BREEAM In-Use International success

The first building to be certified under the new BREEAM In-Use International 2013 scheme is Mentorn 1, at Kungsbron in central Stockholm.

The development is approximately 17,460 m2 mixed office and retail space, owned by DNB Group and managed by Humlegården Fastigheter AB.  It was built in 2009 and scored ‘Very Good’ under Parts 1 & 2 of the new scheme, which was launched in June 2013.

“Congratulations to DNB, Humlegården and the BREEAM In-Use auditors Piacon AB” says Gavin Dunn, Director of BREEAM.  “This is a real triumph for Sweden with the first building certified under the new international version of BREEAM In-Use.  There are a lot more in the pipeline – in Sweden, France, Belgium and many other countries.”
Gro Boge, CEO of DNB REIM says “We are very proud to have first property in Sweden certified under BREEAM In-Use International. DNB REIM believes there is a strong correlation between a high environmental standard and high competitiveness.  We are a strategic partner in the programme to develop a specific version of BREEAM In-Use for Norway, and are planning to certify our buildings in accordance with BREEAM In-Use. For the last five years we have worked under a programme with the Government in Norway to reduce energy output in our properties. This has led to savings of over 15%, which directly benefits our tenants.  With this positive result, DNB has been granted a new energy program with the Government which aims to reduce energy demand by a further 20% over the next five years.”
“Certification of Mentorn 1 is a natural part of our long-term commitment to energy and sustainability. In May 2013, we appointed a Head of Sustainability for further focus on these issues” says Per-Arne Rudbert, CEO Humlegården Fastigheter AB. “It is an honour  to be the first company in the world to certify a building under the new scheme, particularly as Humlegården’s primary business is to manage and develop  existing buildings in central Stockholm” says Rebecka Yrlid, Head of Sustainability Humlegården Fastigheter AB.
"BREEAM In Use is easy to use and cost efficient so I hope more property owners/managers will use it to help them reduce their environmental impact" says BREEAM In-Use auditor on the project Pia Öhrling of Piacon AB.
Global interest in BREEAM In-Use since its launch in 2009 has prompted BRE Global to develop the new scheme to accommodate a diverse, international market. The development of BREEAM In-Use International has involved the engagement of industry stakeholders and BREEAM’s National Scheme Operators (NSOs), to ensure the product meets market requirements.
The assessment methodology within BREEAM In-Use International is truly international. It enables the comparison of assets between countries, and provides users with a universally understood and recognised rating. This has been achieved through various adaptations including the inclusion of an energy model, where the scoring methodology is based on asset energy, operational energy and climatic data.
