BRE provides answers to flood prevention

The flooding caused by unprecedented recent rainfall has highlighted the need for flood resilience. BRE has been active in this field for many years, is a key partner in a pan-European project, and is hosting a major conference on the subject in March 2014.

A group of leading experts published an open letter in The Daily Telegraph on Friday, calling for action on developing flood resilient buildings and infrastructure in the UK, following devastating flooding after the wettest January in England for two and half centuries.

BRE has been studying the issues of water run off from built developments for several years, and evaluating the use of techniques such as sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDs), swales that hold back water from sudden heavy rains, green roofs and permeable paving that allow water to infiltrate the ground.

Many of these systems and techniques are showcased on the BRE Innovation Park at Watford near London, and at our innovation park at Ravenscraig, near Glasgow.

The Watford innovation park was featured on ITN's News at Ten on Friday 21 February, where science editor Lawrence McGinty visited us to film permeable or porous paving in action. See the clip

ITN also covered flood resisting doors, in the labs of Aquobex - a partner with BRE and architects BACA who are developing a flood resilient house design with funding support from Defra

The SMARTeST FP7 Project and The Six Steps to Flood Resilience

BRE was a major partner in the pan-EU SMARTesT project that explored the options for flood resilient building design. The project is covered in greater detail online, and a checklist for homeowners and for local authorities have been published.

Britain under water: flooding conference, BRE Watford, 20 March

Planned long before the major flooding of Winter 2014, this conference provides the latest information about flood resilience policy, practice and research, bringing together leading experts in the field and enabling discussion and debate about the realities of flooding.

Delegates will also be able to contribute to the development of a policy paper prepared by BRE, which will include the recommendations on how to avoid flooding disasters at individual, community, commercial and national levels. Speakers include Craig Elliot from the Environment Agency; Paul Cobbing, Chief Executive of the National Flood Forum; Tom Saville, ARUP; and Mary Dhonau of the Flood Protection Association.
