Innovation Discovery Programme
Unlocking Innovation in the built environment

'We see this as a natural extension of the services we offer to our clients,' says Martin Wyatt , BRE's CEO. 'Ultimately they are only interested in what research and innovation can bring to their company, and often not in the science itself - that's our job.'

It is generally recognised that the UK construction industry must innovate if it is to compete effectively and prosper in this new era of global competition. Whilst much attention has been paid to process and management innovation, technological innovation has been badly neglected.

True technological innovation offers the only real, sustainable and profitable point of differentiation for many companies operating in the highly competitive markets that typify the world economy. However, there is increasing concern amongst large companies as to how they generate and sustain a stream of innovative products, services and ideas. For many organisations, the standard approach to innovation and product development has become so staid and ingrained it is stifling the very life-blood of the company.

The practice of innovation needs innovation, companies need a new way of discovering innovation, a way that is repeatable, and not limited by the normal corporate constraints.

Unlocking Innovation an Inventa & BRE collaboration - the Innovation Discovery Programme

The Innovation Discovery Programme is a collaboration between BRE - with its extensive technical expertise and knowledge of the construction sector - and Inventa Partners - a company with wide experience of guiding companies through the process of unlocking their own innovations, and exploiting the latest ideas from elsewhere.

With the UK research and development base valued at more than £60 billion, there is considerable scope for greater development of new products and processes. But finding new ways to access technical solutions, and create new and improved products on the back of them, can require companies to invest significant time and money. It is for this reason that BRE and Inventa Partners have created a unique approach to enable companies to unlock innovation efficiently and effectively.

'The problem for UK product manufacturers is that when they carry out research and development themselves, they need to claw back the investment in the prices they charge', says Gideon Davenport, Director at Inventa Partners. 'That makes new products more expensive and customers may be unwilling to pay a premium - this can stifle innovation. BRE and Inventa will look across the existing research base (within the construction industry and outside) to see if there is anything that can be applied to our clients' problems.'
