Water Extraction

Water extraction: m3 water extracted

Around the world, water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource, due to increased demand, and changes in patterns of rainfall. To recognise the value of water as a resource, and the damage that over-extraction from rivers and aquifers can cause, this category established by BRE, includes all water extraction, except:

  • Seawater
  • Water extracted for cooling or power generation and then returned to the same source with no change in water quality (water lost through evaporation would be included in the category)
  • Water stored in holding lakes on site for recirculation (‘top-up’ water from other sources would be included)
  • Rainwater collected for storage on site

This category is measured using m3 of water extracted.
