One Day Course

Details :

The course is intended for those who would like to develop and update their knowledge of interior lighting. It is suitable for a wide range of professionals including building owners, facilities managers, electrical contractors, building services engineers, architects and interior designers. No prior technical knowledge of lighting is assumed.

Event programme

  • Principles of lighting
    • How much light is needed, and where? Colour. Glare. Using daylight.
  •  Lamps and control gear
    • The different types of fluorescent lamp. Discharge lamps. Lamp choices for general and display lighting.  
  • LEDs
    • Are LEDs now the preferred choice? Specifying LED lighting. 
  • Luminaires
    •  Making sure light fittings are energy efficient. Issues in office lighting. 
  • Lighting controls
    •  Choosing controls to combine energy savings with flexibility in lighting management.
  • The new legislation
    •  From 2010, the Building Regulations Part L and the Energy using Products directives will constrain the choice of lamps and the overall efficiency of a lighting system. 
  • Lighting calculation and design
    • Computer-based tools for lighting design (Dialux)

The presentations include a range of examples exploring key issues in office, retail, industrial and domestic environments.

The course leader is Dr Paul Littlefair, who heads BRE's lighting team. Dr Littlefair has 30 years experience in lighting and has written over 80 papers and books on the subject, including guides on office lighting, hospital lighting, and daylighting. He acts as a technical adviser to Government schemes to encourage the update of energy efficient lighting
