This workshop presents practical advice on overshadowing and providing daylight and sunlight to buildings in built up areas.

Details :

This workshop presents practical advice on overshadowing and providing daylight and sunlight to buildings in built up areas. It explains the guidance in the BRE Report “Site Layout Design for Daylight and Sunlight: a guide to good practice”.  It describes the contents of the guide and how to use it, with specific guidance on:

  • Providing good daylighting and sunlighting within a new development.
  • Safeguarding sunlight and daylight within existing buildings nearby.
  • Protection of daylighting of adjoining land for future development.
  • Sunlighting of gardens and amenity areas.

The presenter is Dr Paul Littlefair, author of the BRE Report, who has over 30 years experience in daylight. The event is ideal both for those who have little knowledge of daylight and sunlight, and those wishing to improve their skills in this area. A special tools session will give delegates practical experience of using the calculation methods in the guide. As the workshop element is highly participative and interactive, numbers are limited to 25 delegates. A copy of the 2011 'Site layout planning for daylight and sunlight: a guide to good practice' is required; these will be available at a reduced rate to delegates.

At the end of the day, delegates will

  • understand the principles involved in providing daylight and sunlight to buildings in urban areas
  • know simple rules of thumb for the impact of obstruction of windows
  • be able to assess overshadowing to existing buildings following construction of a new development nearby
  • be able to use the BRE skylight and sunlight indicators.
