Sustainability Through Planning:
Using BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) in Local Planning Policy

A one day workshop to explore the successful use of BREEAM and CSH requirements within local planning policy.

12 August 2010, BRE Watford

Sustainable buildings form a central plank of the Government’s vision for ‘sustainable development’ and Planning Policy Statement 1 requires planning authorities to engage constructively and imaginatively to encourage the delivery of sustainable buildings.

A successful approach has been spearheaded by a number of Local Planning Authorities (LPAs), including Brighton and Hove City Council and Ashford Borough Council. In these areas development is now encouraged to meet levels of sustainability stretching beyond the legal baseline.

At a time when planning authorities are in the process of writing their Core Strategies, it is vital that policy requirements for BREEAM/CSH are properly written and positioned if they are to be approved by the Planning Inspectorate and if they are to be implemented in practice.

Why attend ?

LPAs wishing to adopt their own policies for sustainable buildings will find the workshops and presentations at Sustainability Through Planning improve their understanding of:

  • the relationship between BREEAM, the CSH and the planning system
  • writing local planning policy requirements for BREEAM & the CSH
  • writing BREEAM & CSH conditions
  • using BREEAM and the CSH as a negotiating tool in pre-application discussions
  • implications for local developers

Who should attend?

Local authority planning, development control and building control officers, elected and executive members, consultants (in sustainability and planning) and other professionals with roles centred on the delivery of sustainable development in the built environment.
