News SAP 2012 A public consultation has been launched on the latest changes to SAP – the Standard Assessment Procedure for the Energy Rating of Dwellings. SAP 2012 will underpin the 2013 update of Part L and equivalent legislation in Wales, Scotland and N Ireland. Proposed improvements cover the treatment of boiler systems, the use of regional weather data, default heat pump performance, pipe insulation and thermal bridging. The consultation also proposes amending CO₂ emission factors to include the global warming impact of CH₄ and N₂O emissions. View and comment on the proposals at www.bre.co.uk/sap2012. First BREEAM badge of recognition for software Southfacing, the creator of TrackerPlus, has been awarded the first BREEAM badge of recognition for software. TrackerPlus streamlines the BREEAM assessment process for members of the design team, and allows assessors to submit their assessments directly from the system to BREEAM for quality assurance (QA) and certification. More ... Finalists in Passivhaus competition announced The finalists in a competition to create Passivhaus demonstration homes for the BRE Innovation Parks in Watford and Scotland have been named. The aim of the competition has been to demonstrate that the Passivhaus standard can provide an affordable method of delivering ultra-low energy social and private housing. New website provides technical sustainability expertise A new website by the Travis Perkins Group offers technical sustainability expertise for new build and refurbishment projects. Aimed at builders and specifiers, the Sustainable Building Solutions site includes standard construction details, technical advice and recommended products and services. The site also has a technical helpline for customers, which is managed by BRE. More ... Launch of the Think Low Carbon Centre The new Think Low Carbon Centre will be launched by Barnsley College, in collaboration with BRE, on 22 February 2012. The Centre will demonstrate the latest technologies and construction methods for making buildings ultra-energy efficient. Part funded by the European Union through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF programme 2007-13, it is open to companies seeking sustainable building skills and a better understanding of how they can benefit from new green initiatives such as the Government's Green Deal. Environmental Profiles success for Rockpanel Rockpanel Group’s exterior cladding products have been assessed under BRE Global’s Environmental Profiles life cycle assessment methodology, and granted an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This acknowledges the environmental performance of Rockpanel products, with A and A+ ratings for various structures, which are listed on GreenBookLive Part F 2010 – where to start: an introduction for housebuilders and designers A new publication explains how new homes can comply with the 2010 edition of Part F, which sets out strategies that should, if executed correctly, ensure good ventilation regardless of the level of airtightness. The guide works through the possible solutions on a range of common house and apartment types, explains some of the terminology in Part F and gives a broad understanding of the changes this will entail in practice. Proposed changes to Part L – online seminar At a conference at BRE Watford on 7 February (now fully booked), DCLG officials and their technical advisors will present the details of proposed changes to Part L in the context of the Government's overall low-carbon strategy. Events and training BREEAM Accredited Professional Training BREEAM is internationally recognised as the most robust method for assessing the environmental performance of buildings. BREEAM APs provide the design team with expert advice on sustainability and environmental design and assessment. They help to schedule activities, set priorities and negotiate the trade-offs required to achieve a target BREEAM rating. A BREEAM AP training course is on 27 January at BRE Watford. More ... Sustainable refurbishment for housing A course on 31 January at BRE Watford will provide practical guidance on improving the energy efficiency of existing housing by radical, large-scale sustainable refurbishment. More ... Introduction to photovoltaics A basic introduction, and the knowledge to make a fundamental assessment of the suitability of photovoltaics, is provided by a course on 31 January at BRE Watford. Understanding the Code for Sustainable Homes’ energy requirements A course at BRE Watford on 1 February is aimed at those involved in designing and building to the Code for Sustainable Homes energy standard in line with current Part L 2010 Building Regulations, and looking ahead to potential changes to Part L in 2013. More ... BRE BTEC Professional Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment The Level 4 BTEC Professional Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment has been developed to meet national standards and to address non-fire engineered buildings. The next course and assessment for this qualification will be at BRE Watford on 6-10 February. More ... Certified Passivhaus Designer training Distance learning and seven training days split over two weeks, from 8-17 February at BRE Watford, will lead to the Certified Passivhaus Designer qualification that provides candidates with all of the skills necessary to successfully design and deliver domestic buildings to the Passivhaus standard. The management of hazardous waste A course at BRE Watford on 13 February will explain which wastes are classified as hazardous, and provide up-to-date advice on how to comply with the relevant regulations. Leadership in Sustainability A workshop at BRE Watford on 14 February has been designed especially for managers who are charged with developing and implementing a corporate responsibility and sustainability strategy within their organisations. Solar masterclass: wind loading and roof structures With the rapid rise in the numbers of PV and solar thermal installers, changing regulations and concerns over building control issues, a half day seminar on 13 March 2012 at BRE Watford – aimed at building control officers, installers, mounting system manufacturers – will provide the most up-to-date information on this safety-critical topic. Renewable energy: lessons from the community sustainable energy programme A series of free one-day workshops, supported by the BIG lottery fund, are being held across England in January-April 2012. They will examine how changes in government policy are shaping the low carbon ambitions of the country, investigate lessons from installations using regional case studies, and discuss how and where current renewable energy technologies can be effectively deployed.
