International joint venture addresses future R&D challengesThe foundations of a research community that is able to meet new international demands for applied research engineering, were laid down with the recent signing in Munich of a Memorandum of Understanding by Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics and the BRE Group. The Memorandum outlines key areas of collaboration, which will include communication and information technology, low energy buildings and renewable energy systems, and health and environment issues. More ... Maximising the recovery of demolition materialsA BRE Trust funded project aims to maximise the recovery of building products that are difficult to reuse, recycle or recover when a building is demolished. As part of this, the demolition of a building on the BRE Innovation Park is being used to gather information on the recyclability, time and costs of demolition. The building is an insulated concrete formwork structure, made from polystyrene blocks infilled with concrete and reinforcing bar. This system offers speedy construction, but a low-waste-to-landfill demolition is more difficult. The results of this project will be published in a BRE Trust report. More... Swedish development is BREEAM assessedThe first Bespoke BREEAM Communities standard applicable outside the UK has been finalised. Masthusen, in the centre of the Western Harbour in Malmo, is expected to be the first international project certified under the standard.
