BIM Training FAQs
Frequently asked questions around BIM training and membership with the BRE Academy
What is BIM?
For an overview of BIM and answers to many of the commonly asked questions we would recommend reading through the BIM Task Group’s FAQs.
Why do I need to consider BIM?
The Government Construction Strategy (GCS) states that: Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016. This refers to all centrally procured Government projects as outlined in the GCS including new build and retained estate, vertical and linear. The main document that outlines this requirement for the capital/delivery phase of projects is the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 1192-2:2013 that states:
“The fundamental principles of Level 2 [Building] Information modelling are:
c) evaluation of the proposed approach, capability and capacity of each supplier, and their supply chain, to deliver the required information, prior to contract award;”

Why do I need BIM Certification?
While BIM is an emerging practice, many organisations are struggling to differentiate between genuine ability and clever marketing, at BRE Global Ltd we are offering a third party certificated benchmark to give confidence that those who have achieved certification in our scheme are BIM capable.
Based on PAS1192:2, certification shows potential employers that the individual has met the industry standards and is working to the highest standards. With regular assessment and audits of completed works, employers understand that certificated practitioners have the capability to complete BIM Level 2 tasks.
If I have done software training for BIM previously, can I join membership or certification?
Our BIM courses do not consider software but rather the process of meeting HM Governments requirements to achieve BIM level 2. Software surprisingly, has very little to do with it.
This course provides information on the government strategy as well as identifying the requirements to achieve BIM level 2, and the processes, standards, roles and responsibilities required to do so.
Previous training on software you may have done - although valuable, will not give you eligibility for the BRE Academy Membership or BRE Certification schemes without having completed BRE Academy BIM training.
My question wasn’t covered as part of these FAQs, where can I get further information?
