- Protecting new
buildings
If you are building in area
with elevated radon potential you should consider installing radon
protection during construction. (Built in radon protection is usually
very effective.) Requirement C1 [Resistance to contaminants] of
Schedule 1 of the Building Regulations 2000 for England and Wales
states: “Reasonable precautions shall be taken to avoid
danger to health and safety caused by contaminants on or in the ground
covered, or to be covered by the building and any land associated with
the building” and Approved Document C, Site preparation and
resistance to moisture and contaminants, which supports the Building
Regulations 2000 for England and Wales states: “Although the
precise areas where measures should be taken are listed in the BRE
Report ( BR 211 Radon: guidance on protective measures for new
dwellings), these are reviewed by CLG (Communities and local
government) in the light of advice from the National Radiological
Protection Board (NRPB)(Now HPA )and the British Geological Survey
(BGS). Current information on the areas delineated by CLG for the
purposes of Building Regulations should be obtained from local
authority building control officers or from approved inspectors.
Changes to areas delineated as requiring radon protection will be
notified to Building Control Bodies and will be posted on the CLG
website.”
Note: Radon protection now applies to extensions and any change of use
to a residential or sleeping use .
