BRE Centre for Integrated and Sustainable Communities
Based at the University of Brasilia's Laboratory for the Built Environment, Inclusion and Sustainability, this BRE Centre of Excellence researches and develops tools and services that enable the creation, delivery and maintenance of a more sustainable built environment.
The Laboratory for the Built Environment, Inclusion and Sustainability (LACIS) is a partnership between the Centres for Sustainable Development (CDS/UnB), the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU/UnB) and Gama Faculty campus.
In 2013 the BRE Trust become a partner in the Centre, endorsing it as the BRE University Centre of Excellence for Integrated and Sustainable Communities. Professor Raquel Naves Blumenschein is the head of LACIS and has been appointed as the BRE Trust Chair.
LACIS develops research focused in three areas:
Productive construction supply chain - This research deals with aspects of innovation and sustainability of the materials, processes and products of the construction industry supply chain, covering buildings, urban spaces and urban infrastructure.
Urban waste management - This research aims for the integrated management of solid waste, includes the optimization of environmental sanitation, the integration of social agents and construction waste recycling.
Social and urban regeneration systems - This line of research deals with the urban environmental management; sustainable, healthy and eco-efficient cities; low cost housing; sustainable mobility; green infrastructure; water cycle ecologic management; education for sustainability; and models for inclusion.
A major output of BRE/ University of Brasilia collaboration is the Park for Innovation and Sustainability for the Built Environment known as PISAC.
PISAC – Park for Innovation and Sustainability for the Built Environment
PISAC is a living laboratory where new technologies and design will be developed and evaluated in use. Based on the model developed by BRE, PISAC is a partnership with the BRE, University of Brasilia, the Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry (CBIC) and the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MCTI). Other partners will be integrated during 2013 and 2014.
