Photovoltaics
Solar Panels or Photovoltaics (often shortened to PV) use energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. PV systems produce no greenhouse gases and can save approximately 455kg of carbon dioxide emissions per year, adding up to about 11 tonnes over a system's lifetime.
The average UK home could generate 50-60% of the power needed to supply its electricity demand providing it is used efficiently and the home has enough south facing roof.
PV will work in any weather as long as there is daylight. The greater the intensity of the sunlight, the more electricity is generated. The power can be used straight away or linked back into the power grid.
