1921-2011: Ninety years of building research
BRE was established as the Building Research Station – the world's first building research organisation – in 1921.
We have loaded material about key moments during our 90 year history and look to how our work will shape the built environment in the future.
As well as written material, we will upload a pictorial history from our archives that shows some of the key buildings and research projects that we have been involved in, and a series of short videos will chart some of the more unusual areas of work that BRE has covered over the years.
In the meantime, take a read through the potted history of the BRE Group.
The photograph shows the very first Building Research Station laboratory at a site in East Acton, west of London, where BRS had a temporary home in former army huts before moving to the Bucknalls site in Watford (where we are still based today) in 1925.
