Fantastic first for BRE in 2011 Sunday Times Best Green Companies List
The BRE Group has achieved first place in the Best Larger Firm with Low Environmental Impact category in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards. It also achieved 11th place overall in the Top 60 Best Green Companies which acknowledges organisations with a pioneering and innovative approach to continually improving their environmental performance.
Stuart Blofeld who developed BRE's sustainability strategy - The S Plan - says ‘We are ‘walking the talk' on sustainability: we've been consistently working towards our goal of being carbon neutral by 2015, we are now diverting 90% of our waste from landfill and fully expect this to be zero waste to landfill by the end of the year (ahead of target). We've introduced a range of sustainable transport options for staff, including our new staff bike pool, and we have a terrific community schools programme in place. It's great to be recognised in this way, and I feel tremendously proud of my company'.
Now in its fourth year, the Sunday Times Best Green Companies is unique. It combines both a robust methodology to measure actual corporate environmental performance, together with a survey of company employees to find out whether the company standards and procedures are executed all the way down to the shop floor.
BRE Chairman Martin Wyatt added ‘This is a terrific result for BRE. In this category we compete against some global big hitters with large resources at their disposal. Our success is attributable to our creative approach to sustainability coupled with the firm commitment of staff. We are delighted with this result.'
