Achieving sustainability through planning
Workshops will assist local authority planners in the use of BREEAM and the CSH
BREEAM and CSH certified buildings use less energy, consume less water and are built with greater resilience in the face of the myriad of challenges the UK faces, both environmentally and economically.
BRE Global is running a series of events to assist planners in the successful use of BREEAM and the CSH within local planning policy. These one day workshops also provide an opportunity for the successful use of the schemes by local authorities such as Brighton & Hove City Council and Ashford Borough Council to be explored.
Feedback from an initial pilot for the series, held at BRE Global on 1 June, demonstrated that local authorities recognise the benefits of BREEAM and the CSH in lowering carbon emissions and water consumption, as well as reducing running costs and future proofing a building. There are particular areas where further guidance is needed, particularly around the cost implications of building to different levels under BREEAM or the CSH.
The next events in the series take place in Telford on 1 July and in Watford on 12 August. For more information and to book a place go to www.breeam.org/events

Notes for Editors
1 BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings around the world, with 200,000 buildings certified and over a million buildings in total registered under the scheme. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de-facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance. Credits are awarded in nine categories according to performance. These credits are then added together to produce a single overall score on a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding, which is also reflected in a star rating from 1 to 5 stars http://www.breeam.org/.
2 BRE Global Limited (incorporating LPCB & BREEAM) is an independent third party approvals body offering certification of fire, security and sustainability products and services to an international market. BRE Global mission is to ‘Protect People, Property and the Planet' and is a trading subsidiary of the BRE Trust, the registered research and education charity which owns the BRE Group.
