Major Developers Back BREEAM for Central and Eastern Europe

Major European property developers have backed the introduction of BREEAM at a recent meeting of the Central & Eastern European (CEE) Developers' Sustainability Forum.

The group includes developers and consultants including AIG/Lincoln, Buro Happold, ING Real Estate, Orco Property Group, ProLogis and Waterman International, who met in Warsaw this month to discuss potential pilot projects.

David Lawrence, European Director - Construction & Development for AIG/Lincoln said "We are delighted to have initiated this first meeting in Central & Eastern Europe and see the enthusiastic response from developers, consultants and environmental experts. Environmental certification is an integral part of AIG/Lincoln's development process and it has been a pleasure to work closely with BRE Global over the past two years and to contribute to the content of the new BREEAM Europe certification through our pilot projects. It is a document that is very much needed in the region for developers to benchmark and improve their environmental standards".

Martin Earl, CEE Director for Waterman International said "We welcome the launch of the long established BREEAM system into Europe and look forward to the opportunity to use our experience of BREEAM in the UK to bring the benefits of using such a system to our clients and stakeholders in the CEE region".

BRE Global is currently seeking developers who wish to assess their projects across Europe under the scheme during its first pilot year of operation. BRE Global will also be running scheduled training courses in various locations for consultants wishing to train to become BREEAM assessors internationally.

BREEAM is also being used by the International Council of Shopping Centres for retail pilot developments in Europe and adapted by Toyota for its European retail operations. For more information on BREEAM, go to http://www.breeam.org/
