Redevco achieves sustainable transformation of C&A Zaandam - one of 28 BREEAM certificates at MAPIC

Leading retail property investor Redevco is celebrating the award of 28 BREEAM certificates at MAPIC, including one for the notable sustainable refurbishment of a new shopping icon in Zaandam, Netherlands.

RedevcoThe major redevelopment of a 2,600m2 C&A store on the Gedempte Gracht in the centre of Zaandam marks a remarkable transformation of a 1960s building.

The dated structure was transformed into a modern, very sustainable building that integrates traditional features of the town’s historical wooden architecture into the adjoining retail environment and Zaandam’s urban regeneration plan.

Clemens Brenninkmeijer, Managing Director Redevco Nederland, says “In partnership with our tenant C&A, we first stripped the building before redeveloping it in a sustainable way that architecturally also sensitively complements its location in the centre of Zaandam. Redevco’s philosophy is that our activities must demonstrate a good balance between financial and economic sustainability, while being environmentally friendly and meeting the needs of the local community. We see it as our role to offer attractive retail locations that are good for the businesses of retail tenants, which we achieve through active consultation with all stakeholders including our customers, municipalities, and people that live in the neighbourhood.”

C&A Zaandam achieved BREEAM NL In-Use Very Good, and is one of 28 BREEAM certificates being awarded to the developer at MAPIC this week. The list includes ten properties in Belgium, nine in France, four in the Netherlands and five in the UK. This now brings the total number of BREEAM certified Redevco assets to 135, equivalent to 45% of the total investment value of the Redevco portfolio. Redevco plan to certify all assets under their management with BREEAM In-Use by the end of 2016.
