BRE takes over BuildingSMART UK

From 1st January 2013 BRE will take over the running of BuildingSMART UK - a key driving force in the uptake of BIM. Bringing together member organisations who share the vision of improving construction through the use of open Building Information Modelling (BIM)*, BuildingSMART UK’s remit is to develop the standards and tools required to ensure that the industry knows what open BIM is and how to use it effectively to achieve greener, leaner and more efficient buildings and infrastructure in the UK.

Nick Tune, Director of BRE Wales and South West, who was appointed as Director of BuildingSMART UK in July of this year said ‘The uptake of BIM is growing exponentially within the UK. We are at a critical stage in ensuring that the underpinning knowledge, tools, training and standards are in place to enable widespread take up. With BRE at the helm of  BuildingSMART we can steer a course for both large and small companies that could transform the future construction and operation of our buildings”

There are currently 50+ members of BuildingSMART who benefit from training programmes, networking events and access to standards, educational tools and a helpline related to BIM. BRE’s mission is to extend the membership across the whole construction supply chain.

Professor Tim Broyd of UCL, an existing BuildingSMART member said ‘BuildingSMART has been at the forefront of BIM development for many years.  The UK business environment is driving rapid increases in the application of BIM techniques to real building and infrastructure projects.  Reliable standards and effective practitioner training are absolutely vital.  BRE will provide a great home to enable BuildingSMART to deliver both’.

BRE is currently active in BIM across a multitude of projects, not only in helping clients control energy use in their buildings but also to understand how their products, materials and systems will perform and how their environmental performance could be improved. BIM also plays a major part in the BRE Trust’s recently-announced Future Cities programme and its  Smart Grids project.

Governance of BuildingSMART will remain with an independent management board with its own set of accounts.

NOTES TO EDITOR

*Open BIM is a universal approach to the collaborative design, realisation and operation of buildings based on open standards and workflows. Open BIM is an initiative of buildingSMART. It

  • supports a transparent, open workflow, allowing project members to participate regardless of the software tools they use.
  • creates a common language for widely referenced processes, allowing industry and government to procure projects with transparent commercial engagement, comparable service evaluation and assured data quality.
  • provides enduring project data for use throughout the asset life--cycle, avoiding multiple input of the same data and consequential errors.
