BRE launches Women's Network

The first in a series of quarterly networking events focuses on inspirational leadership.

The BRE Women’s Network aims to positively contribute to the construction industry challenge of low numbers of women in this sector, particularly in senior positions. Recognising that there is strength in diversity, the network will organise events open to men and women at any stage in their career.

“The BRE Women’s Network is in its very early stages and is still being shaped by staff needs”, says Helen Pineo, BREEAM Communities Manager who leads the network. “There are so many women’s groups doing great things in the construction industry. We want our network to act as a portal bringing a taster of the activities and support that already exist directly to our site for the benefit of our colleagues and partners. This is a staff-led initiative, but senior management have been very supportive and see this as an activity in line with BRE’s ethos.”

Over 50 industry professionals attended the first event, Inspirational leaders in the built environment on 4 July, 2013 to hear from Liz Goodwin, a BRE Trustee and chief executive of Waste Resources Action Plan (WRAP); Zara Lamont, performance improvement director of Carillion; and other industry leaders.

Goodwin and Lamont challenged delegates to take calculated risks and make the most of their own unique strengths and traits to realise their potential. Both commented that effective leaders can have very different personalities and leadership styles. Claire Gott, a structural engineer at WSP in the early stages of her career, also spoke about the need for passion and the importance of support from employers to help develop career paths.

The events, developed in consultation with BRE employees, are structured in four themes – ‘Inspire’, ‘Involve’, ‘Learn’ and ‘Lead’. Future events will be held in co-operation with partners and sponsors and will build on each other, focusing more on practical skills and workshops in the final two events. The format of the events includes panel discussions, Q&As and networking.

The next event will take place on 19 September at BRE.  Please visit BRE Events to register a place. A linkedin group has been set up to share information on events and other news and activities. Search ‘BRE Women’s Network’ to join.
