The BRE Academy has today announced the launch of BREEAM Associate, a new qualification that has been designed to ensure delivery teams and clients can be effective and proactive, armed with knowledge and confidence when undertaking the BREEAM process to achieve the best result in the most efficient way.

Involving a web-based course, the qualification is designed to enhance the way construction sector professionals including contractors, engineers, architects, product manufacturers and supply chains currently deliver BREEAM, the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for buildings and infrastructure, on their projects.

Giving a clear explanation of the BREEAM process including the language used and how to navigate the manuals, the new course provides all of the essential information needed to plan and deliver BREEAM efficiently. It also includes vital tips on how to avoid common mistakes and manage risk from pre-tender through to completion.

The BREEAM Associate course has been designed using industry feedback to be suitable for a wide range of users. Design teams, construction teams, architects, engineers, project managers, value engineers, procurement and those with an interest in environmental assessment and BREEAM, will all benefit from the online training which covers all BREEAM schemes except Communities and In-Use assessments. It enables teams to be proactive in planning, advises on when to appoint assessors and sustainability champions, and delivers value via improving the opportunity for high performance at low cost.

Learnings from the course will enable teams to be proactive in planning and delivering value via improving the opportunity for high performance at low cost. This will be achieved by enhancing the ability to embed appropriate consideration of the issues throughout the design and construction process.

Pauline Traetto, Director of the BRE Academy commented ‘The course has been carefully designed to help forward-thinking professionals deploy the industry’s leading sustainability accreditation within their normal project role. It is the perfect introduction to enable individuals to pitch BREEAM in bids and to deliver it effectively in practice.’

The BREEAM Associate course has been successfully piloted with leading construction industry organisations including Arcardis, BAM, ASSA ABLOY, BT, Ferrovial, Grontmij, HOK, ISG, Segro and WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff. These firms have all provided key feedback which has confirmed the course’s ability to drive positive and cost-effective results from BREEAM, including early engagement.

Ronak Gawarwala, Sustainable Design Leader at HOK said ‘We are committed to ensuring that our design and technical staff have the qualifications that enable them to deliver the best projects for our clients, and an important part of this is providing effective training opportunities within the sustainability sector. Our early involvement in piloting this new training offer builds on our established relationship with BRE while enabling our staff to be among the first UK design professionals to achieve this credential.’
