Diploma in domestic energy assessment (DEA)

Assessment and Training

Register with BRE, the UK’s leading centre of excellence in energy and housing, to take you through the assessment and training necessary for the Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment.

Why are Domestic Energy Assessors needed?

The need for an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) stems from the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive which requires that all properties sold or let must have an EPC. This directive must be complied with by January 2009, at the latest, and it continues to be implemented in Northern Ireland, England and Wales during 2008.

The Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment is a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) and is directly related to the relevant National Occupational Standards. It is the qualification that you must achieve before applying to be an accredited DEA. This programme provides a package of all you need to achieve the Diploma. You start with the assessment package which includes a full introduction to the business and how to build your portfolio of evidence for the qualification. Then add the required training modules, according to your skills needs, building up to a full programme for those new to this with no prior relevant experience.

The training modules include:

  • An optional distance learning programme with University of the West of England (UWE) dealing with the construction of houses to provide a sound background for the DEA
  • Three one-day teaching and hands-on practical training by BRE and South Eastern Regional College (SERC) at Norther Ireland
    • House Construction and Survey
    • Energy rating, RdSAP, heating and controls
    • Practice Assessments

These will provide the basis for understanding and practice needed for the Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment. The programme can be tailored to be suitable for individuals from a wide range of backgrounds from the experienced RdSAP qualified energy surveyor to the new entrant.
