For education buildings a functional unit based on a minimum acoustic performance has been used. Although a range of different performance thresholds could be identified only one functional unit was deemed necessary. This was because the difference between them was in reality only a small amount of additional insulation. This made no significant difference across the environmental impact of the specifications. We used the DFES standard specifications documents [1]&[2] and partition type B which were all classed as having acoustic performance greater than 45 Rw dB and severe duty robustness ratings, these documentation gave example specifications which were deemed compliant to the functional unit.

For walls within schools which do not need to have acoustic separation, e.g. within administrative areas etc, the commercial internal wall ratings should be used.
