The Passivhaus Standard is the fastest growing low energy standard in Europe with over 30,000 building realised to date, with many more currently being designed and constructed. Passivhaus buildings have a high level of indoor air quality and roughly achieve a 75% reduction in space heating requirements compared to the standard practice for UK new build.

The Certified Passivhaus Designer  qualification provides candidates with all of the skills necessary to successfully design and deliver domestic buildings to the Passivhaus standard.  Successful completion of the course also allows qualified designer’s to register with BRE’s ‘Streamline Certification Procedure’ enabling quick assessment and issue of the Passivhaus Institut 'Quality Assurance' certificates for the completed projects at preferential prices. 

To achieve the qualification candidates will need to successfully complete 25 - 30 hours of distance learning, attend a 7 day ‘classroom’ based course with and successfully pass an examination which is set by the Passivhaus Institut.

During the intensive 7 day training BRE will provide 'optional’ tours of the facilities which includes the largest ‘Anechoic Chamber' in Europe, our ‘Structural Lab’, ‘Burn hall’, and the ‘Timber Library’ giving an insight to the history of BRE.

This course qualifies as 7 days RIBA and Construction Certification CPD.

Event programme

 

Each delegate will receive the login details for the BRE On-line Learning Portal three weeks before attending the course which contains introductory materials and exercises.  An on-line pre-course assessment is also undertaken within the learning portal before attending the course.  Delegates MUST complete the distance learning materials before attending the training course.  Delegates must also bring their own copy of the PHPP Manual to the training course.  Special discount on PHPP package is available to BRE Certified European Passivhaus Designer Training Delegates.  Details will be on the confrimation of booking email.

Main course

Part 1: Held on first 3 days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday):

  • Day 1 - Introduction and Certification requirements, Fundamentals of thermal comfort and thermal insulation
  • Day 2 - Fabric and Construction detailing
  • Day 3 - Fenestration and Solar gains

Week break

Part 2: Held on last 4 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday):

  • Day 4 - Airtightness
  • Day 5 - Ventilation systems 
  • Day 6 - Economics of Passivhaus, heating systems and services
  • Day 7 - Primary Energy, Construction Site Management and Quality Control

The course consists of a mixture of traditional lectures and practical workshops.  The Passivhaus Planning Package is used throughout the training and each delegate will have access to a PC workstation. (Delegates are welcome to bring their personal laptops).

Examination and assessment

Delegates will be informally assessed before attending the main course by means of an on-line pre-course assessment via the BRE On-line Training Portal.  Delegates will need to demonstrate that they have read the introduction pack and have successfully undertaken all of the technical exercises prior to attending the course. Delegates should allow 25 - 30 hours to undertake this work.

Delegates will undertake a final 3 hour ‘open book' exam at BRE to achieve the qualification of 'Certified European Passivhaus' Designer'.  Dates for the examination are 29th June 2013 and 23rd November 2013.

Intended audience

Architects and Energy Consultants with existing experience in designing and delivering low-energy buildings. 

RIBA/CIAT/CIBSE registration details are sufficient evidence of experience with low-energy building design/energy calculations.  If you are not from one of these disciplines, please send in a copy of your CV after booking.
