Introduction to Renewables
One day course
17 September 2010 - BRE, Watford | other dates for this event (at foot of page)
This course will give attendees a basic introduction to renewable technology. Having background knowledge will assist delegates in making informed decisions about how best to use low and zero carbon technologies effectively and economically. The course not only looks at how the technologies work and how to identify them, but also provides information on their limitations. This will help delegates decide what technologies will work best given different parameters. At the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- Why renewable energy has a key role in achieving a reduction in CO2 emissions.
- Be aware of statutory legislation requiring energy efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.
- Identify the main types of Renewable Technology energy sources and the basic principles of their operation
- Recognise the advantages and disadvantages each Renewable Technology energy source
- Make a valued judgement on the suitability of a particular Renewable Technology System for a given situation (location and economic)
- Recognise the relevant planning issues that exist
Programme :
- Energy Basics - The current unsustainable dependency on fossil fuels
- Rising CO2 emissions and what that means for us
- Legislations in place that encourage the use of renewable technology
- What is Renewable Energy?
- Why are renewable energy and sustainability so important?
- Basic principles of
- Photovoltaics PV (Solar Generated Electricity)
- Solar Water Heating (Solar Thermal)
- Air, Water and Ground Source Heat Pumps
- Biomass and Wood Fuel Heating
- Small and Medium Scale Wind Generators
- For each renewable technology we will cover:
- How they work and how they generate energy
- What they look like
- Site and location requirements that must be considered
- Energy effectiveness of each system, how much energy they are likely to produce and what the general payback is likely to be
- Basic information on the new Feed-In Tariffs scheme and the proposed Heat Incentive Scheme.
- Competent Persons Schemes for installing the systems
- Planning consent and constraints
This course will increase candidates' general knowledge on renewable technologies and allow them to make informed decision about where best they can be used.
