"A sustainable building, or green building is an outcome of a design which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use - energy, water, and materials - while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal"
The UK government sees climate change as "the most severe problem we are facing today" and has unreservedly supported global earth summits and embraced international treaties to address the issue.
The UK construction sector is well placed to contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions both at home and overseas by delivering building and infrastructure projects that reduce their impact on the environment whilst also addressing social and economic issues. It recognises that integrating sustainability from the beginning of a project allows a broader range of solutions to be delivered. Considering these issues from the outset reduces pressure on cost and UK practitioners recognise the importance of defining sustainability by building it into the brief.
Britain is uniquely skilled in the revitalisation of communities and the infrastructure and economies upon which they depend. No other nation has the depth of experience or holistic range of skills and knowledge vital to delivering large-scale programmes of integrated, sustainable development, both at home and overseas. Since the 1950s British professionals have adapted to changing economic and environmental circumstances with imagination, determination and dexterity. Engineers, designers, architects and economists have all played their part and have rightly been recognised and in demand worldwide for the quality of their work.
The aim of the seminar is to showcase some of the areas in which the UK excels and, in particular, where those skills, products and services have an application overseas. We will also aim to highlight the overseas markets which offer the best opportunities, both in the short and medium to longer term, and the Government support accessed through UK Trade & Investment to help East Midlands businesses to exploit those opportunities.
