Celebrating sustainable housing achievement

The vital contributions of planners, architects, developers, managers, assessors and others to sustainable housing delivery in the UK, were celebrated at the 2013 BRE Code for Sustainable Homes Awards in London on 3 June. ZEDfactory founder Bill Dunster received a lifetime achievement award. More…

The future of sustainable housing: have your say

The Government is conducting a standards review that will affect the regulatory landscape for housing. Whatever the result of this, BRE believes that the UK housing sector will still need the sort of framework, benchmarks and guidance currently provided by Code for Sustainable Homes. BREEAM UK New Construction – scheme update

BRE has begun the process of updating BREEAM UK New Construction 2011, with the aim of launching the 2014 version early next year. In addition to feedback already received, stakeholders can contribute to the scheme update in a number of ways, including a public survey which closes on 28 June and can be accessed here.

New guidance on protecting homes from flooding

Two publications that explain how homes can be made more resilient to flooding using new technologies were launched on 4 June. Entitled Six steps to property level flood resilience, one has been written specifically for property owners and one for local authorities and professionals. More…

Responsible sourcing standard update

The Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products standard, BES 6001 (Version 2) is being updated. A stakeholder meeting was held on 4 June to review the outcomes (summarised here) of an extensive consultation exercise. The final draft of BES 6001 (version 3) will be disseminated shortly and a closing consultation meeting held at the end of the Autumn. More…

The off-grid home

An off-grid farmhouse with a range of green technologies has been completed in Manmoel, South Wales. Home to the Davies family, it includes photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, a biomass boiler, thermal stores and skirting board heating. Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Rural Development Plan team worked with BRE and SSE on the project. More…

New BREEAM for assessing buildings worldwide

On 1 June BRE launched its updated standard for the overseas market – BREEAM International New Construction 2013. The standard combines two previous international standards, BREEAM Europe Commercial and BREEAM International Bespoke, and is the first BREEAM scheme for the certification of residential buildings outside the UK. New guidance on Fires in cavities in residential buildings

A new NHBC Foundation report follows up on the 2011 publication Fire performance of new residential buildings. It focuses specifically on fire spread in external walls where the cavity between the external façade and the structural frame is incorporated, either as a lining material or as a form of insulation (or both). The production of alkali-activated binders uses less energy and produces less carbon dioxide than conventional Portland cement (PC). These binders also offer flexibility in materials sourcing and can give better durability to sulfates and acid than PC. Digest 530. More…
