BRE Global Accreditation Scheme for Building Energy Assessors (non-dwellings)

Fast Track APEL process for Competent Persons and CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants

As a current member of the BRE Global Competent Persons Scheme or a current member of the CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants  Register you are very well placed to complete the remaining steps to achieve accredited status through the Approved Prior Experience and Learning route (APEL) and be ready to receive instructions to prepare EPCs.

As a Competent Person you are a valued member of one of our existing schemes and we are committed to offering you a quick and cost-effective route to energy assessor accreditation. There are still some details to finalise but broadly we expect the following process:
  • The examination you have already passed will largely cover the requirement to complete the approved test. There will be a need to demonstrate the production of the EPC and recommendations report since this was not part of the original exam.
  • You will need to submit five EPCs and supporting documentation for assessment; one for a new build project and one for an existing building. For the new build project this will most effectively be achieved by re-running one of your recent Part L compliance calculations using Version 3 of iSBEM, or the EPC compliant version of Hevacomp, as soon as these are released.
  • The requirement to demonstrate a range of general professional skills will be satisfied by reference to your professional body affiliation. This will usually mean your status as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with an appropriate professional institution. We will publish a list of acceptable professional qualifications shortly.
  • You may need to provide some additional evidence to demonstrate that you meet all of the competences laid down in the National Occupational Standards for Energy Assessors (see www.energy-assessors.org.uk) . This will depend on the nature and scope of the building projects that you have submitted for assessment. Where additional evidence is necessary we will have a simple process for you to prepare and submit this.
