BRE Global Accreditation Scheme for Building Energy Assessors (non-dwellings)

Vocational route to qualification

Awarding Bodies are currently developing Vocationally Related Qualifications based on the National Occupational Standards and BRE Training will extend its current Assessment Centre approval to include the new award as soon as it is available. Details of training and assessment programmes and associated fees will be given at www.bre.co.uk/training

The Standards are quite unusual in that they describe three different levels of qualification:

Level 3 relates to simple existing buildings with commonly occurring characteristics that can be modelled using the Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM)

Level 4 relates to new and more complex existing buildings that can be modelled using SBEM

Level 5 relates to the most complex new and existing buildings that will need to be modelled using Dynamic Simulation methods

The Level 3 qualification is likely to be of most interest to Domestic Energy Assessors and Home Inspectors who are looking to extend their skills into the commercial buildings sector. A very rough breakdown of the existing buildings stock indicates that around 65% would fit into a Level 3 description, around 30% into Level 4 and around 5% into Level 5.
